2016 KPMG Sydney Royal Wine Show

– Shu Ying Sengmany

Our wines just keep on winning! With four trophies and 4 gold medals won at the 2016 KPMG Sydney Wine Show, there’s no doubt that the passion and hard work of our team is resonating with the judges and the public alike. Our senior winemaker, Matt Byrne’s wine philosophy has always been that the best wines are made in the vineyard not the winery, allowing him to paint a clear regional story.

On winning the Best Cabernet Sauvignon and Best Mature Red Trophies for his 2012 The Evans & Tate Cabernet Sauvignon, Matt attributed the win to his focus on ensuring optimal tannin ripeness in the vineyard. His focus for the past decade has centered around ensuring the grapes are picked at peak flavour ripeness without excess sugar accumulation. He stated the extended post-fermentation maceration has been critical in achieving balanced tannin structure and the use of older French oak has helped preserve the fresh fruit purity while ensuring a length and complexity. This coupled with the exceptional vintage conditions of 2012, created a powerful and sophisticated expression of Margaret River.

The 2013 Evans & Tate Redbrook Chardonnay also won two trophies including Best White Wine! Matt commented on the team’s effort to ensure superior vine canopies and crop balance which had given this wine an increased depth of flavour, wonderful acid balance and enhanced longevity. The lack of malolactic fermentation, the usage of older puncheons as well as having a period of at least 15 months on lees had created intriguing flavours and textural complexity. The 2014 Redbrook Chardonnay, 2012 Redbrook Shiraz and 2012 Redbrook Cabernet Sauvignon also won gold medals at the show. This would be released next year with our 2013 Redbrook Shiraz and 2013 Redbrook Cabernet Sauvignon so watch this space!
